Obligatory "what plant did greenfreak buy today" thread

You know you missed these threads.

I just spent a shitload of money on spring bulbs and orchids. I can't buy anything else this year, I spent way too much. Yes, on plants. :D

First, crocus. Small flowers, the first to bloom in spring:

These guys are often called grape hyancinth, they're also low growing and one of the first to bloom:

Some anemone, more small flowers. I tried them last year and screwed them up so I'm going to try again:

I decided to get some asiatic lilies this year, which I've never really done before. Spot at OTC got me thinking about these when he posted his own pics. This first one reminded me of the Plumeria that I grew this summer:

And now for the tulilps...

I got some interesting looking ones that don't even look like tulips really. I think both the colors will look nice together:

Almost none of my red tulips bloomed this year so I had to get some more to replace them. These are a little special because they have ruffled edges and are almost a little orange:

...and finally, the tulip I fell in love with. "Tulipa Shirley" it's called. The description on the site: A child of the '60s, Shirley opens yellow with raspberry-red highlights and changes to ivory-white with ever-changing edges and flecks of pale purple which spread as the flower matures.

Doesn't that sound great? The picture is even better:

That's it for spring stuff. I'll go find my orchid stuff and post it. I ordered from Hawaii again Ku'u... This time from "Exotic Orchids of Maui". Damned if you guys don't have all the good flowers. It's not fair, I tells ya. ;)

The orchids from Maui arrived today. I'm finding they're much cheaper when you don't buy them in bloom. I have to wait about a year for each of these to bloom but I think it's worth it.

I also ordered two from a different place. They had a blue orchid that I couldn't get out of my mind. I held off ordering it for almost two months. But it's hard to find blue orchids and it's just so damn pretty. And of course, I HAD to get the green orchid. What kind of greenfreak would I be without a green orchid??

I've got to dig up 4 azaleas this weekend. They've had 3 years to do their thing. They just never would grow. I used Mir-acid and kept the bed covered in pine straw. I think the flower bed they are in needs to be dug up and replaced with some good top soil. I've also got a pin oak and a maple in pots I need to plant this fall. I love pin oaks.

I've always loved azaleas but I have to wait till we have our own house to plant them. You're probably right about the soil there, if it's old or doesn't have a lot of nutrients left in it. I've never replaced soil in the ground but that could get pricey, couldn't it?

Prof, I don't think they're edible. A lot of this stuff is though. Did you know that saffron comes from the pollen of crocus flowers? I'm assuming that's why it's so expensive. One flower can only yield a few grains.

Ahhh Plumeria... Out of the 7 cuttings, only 2 survived. But one is the "rainbow" and one "apricot", the two favorites. Rainbow has buds like crazy, it should bloom within 2 weeks if the weather holds out. Apricot probably won't bloom this year. But I'll be ready for them next year, and get them out early. I'll post pics when it finally puts out some flowers. :)

Squiggs, do you really have plants or are you just kiddin? I could totally help you with them. :)

I've had grape-hyacinths before...they're remarkably hardy plants...and very nice. They don't match the bloom paterns from the rest of my flowers though, so they had to go. NExt year, I'm going for orange base with some yellow thrown in for good measure. Maybe some Tiger-lilies to go with my Stella d'oro's and some bleeding hearts. Some nice ground cover plants too :)

If you want tiger lilies for this spring, I think you have to plant them now. I've taken a liking to orange too. And the yellow/red color combination.

orangefreak?!? ;)

do you have access to lei needles up there? (they're basically really long needles you can use to string plumeria to make a lei. )

watch out for the milky sap when you pick the flowers :D

It took me like 5 months to get this thing to bloom, I'm not pulling them off!! :smash: :D

The flowers smell so great though, I wish I could keep the pots inside. I'm going to have three inflos on the yellow plumie next year, and the other one should sprout at least one. This spring is going to be plentiful. :)

I've got seeds from wild Tiger-Lillies at home, and I'll sow them before the first snows for sure.

Hey GF...how are you on indoor plants, or are you mostly an outdoor gardener?
