Tribes crashes cleanly back to the desktop with no error messages or lockup.

This problem is likely an issue is resolved by the Tribes patch. Download the
appropriate patch from the Sierra Web site at
http://www.sierra.com/support/technical/updates and install the patch.

This problem may be caused by a Windows utility polling the Microsoft site for
upgrades, or by an incompatible power usage setting.

Check for Internet polling. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools,
and select Scheduled Tasks. Double-click the Windows Critical Update
Notification icon in the list of scheduled tasks. Make sure the Enabled box at the
bottom of this window is unchecked, and click Apply.

Check the power usage settings as well. Double-click the Power Management
icon in the Control Panel. Make sure the Power schemes field says Always On.
If it does not, select Always On from the drop-down menu. Make sure the three
other fields say Never. If they do not, select Never from the drop-down menu of
each one that does not.

Restart the computer to let any new settings take effect.

The server list is not visible, or it is not possible to connect to the Tribes Master
Server.

This issue is resolved by the Tribes patch. Download the appropriate patch
from the Sierra Web site at
http://www.sierra.com/support/technical/updates/main.html and install the patch.

If the patch fails to resolve the issue, the inability to either see the server list or
connect to the Master Server is usually the result of a firewall or proxy server
blocking outgoing information.

To check for the presence of a firewall:

- Click the Start button on the taskbar.
- Go to Programs and select MS-DOS Prompt.
- At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type PING TRIBES.DYNAMIX.COM and press the
ENTER key on the keyboard.

If no ping times appear, or an Invalid IP address error appears, the outgoing signals
are being blocked. In this case, it will be necessary to contact the Internet Service
Provider (ISP) to resolve the issue.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When playing Tribes through a proxy server, cannot see the Master Server.

When connecting through a proxy server, the Master Server may not be visible.
It is possible to disable the proxy server and allow normal Tribes play.

It is recommended that the Internet Service Provider be contacted for
information and assistance with the matter.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When using Windows NT the game will not start properly.

Windows NT requires Service Pack 3 to run Tribes.

The Windows NT service pack can be found on Microsoft's web site.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OpenGL 3D hardware acceleration is not available in Tribes.

Currently there is no support provided within Tribes for OpenGL. The only 3D
accelerator mode supported is Glide, which requires a 3Dfx brand card. OpenGL
support may be added in a future update. Information about future plans and
support can be found at http://www.tribesplayers.com.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An error in GDI32.DLL error appears when trying to launch Tribes.

This error is likely caused by the presence of old video drivers on the system.
To resolve this, download and install the latest available drivers for all video cards
on the system.

In addition, if a Voodoo 2 3Dfx accelerator is currently installed on the system,
it will be necessary to clear any old drivers from the system. To do this, access
the Voodoo2 control panel in the Display Properties section of the Control Panel.
Click the Glide Sweep or Utility button and follow the instructions for removing old
Glide drivers.

If a 3Dfx accelerator card was on on the system but has been removed, it will be
necessary to disable any previous Glide drivers. To do this, find the
GLIDE2X.DLL and GLIDE3X.DLL files and rename them with a .OLD extension
instead of .DLL.

Restart the computer and launch Tribes again.

It is possible to run a Tribes game on an IPX protocol LAN.

It is possible to run Tribes on a LAN (Local Area Network) using the IPX protocol.

It will be necessary to download and install the appropriate patch from
http://www.sierra.com/support/technical/updates/main.html.

After the patch is installed, select Host Multiplayer from the main menu.

Be aware that if the system is also connected to the Internet, the game being
hosted will appear on the Internet game server list.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The game plays sluggishly or experiences "lag" during gameplay.

Slow gameplay may be resolved by these troubleshooting steps:

1) Make sure that the maximum connection speed for the modem is set to the
highest allowable speed. Documentation that came with the modem should
show where these settings can be adjusted in the modem properties.

2) Select a server with a lower PING from the server list.

3) Make certain the latest drivers available for the modem are being used.
Drivers are typically made available from the modem manufacturer and can be
downloaded for free.

4) Try unchecking the CD Audio option from the game options.

5) Under Options-Network, click MODEM. Lower the PACKET SIZE, PACKET
RATE AND PACKET FRAME rates to improve data flow.

Cannot figure out how to use the Buddy list to find buddies in the server list.

To use the buddy list in Tribes, connect to the Internet and launch Tribes.

Allow the list of game servers to fully load with the list of available games.

Click the Buddy List field, then enter the name or part of the name of the
buddy to be found. Click the downward-pointing arrow to the right of the name
and select that name from the list of buddies.

Click the Favorites category in the server list to sort by favorites.

If an icon showing a pair of eyes appears in the Favorites field of a particular
server, a match has been found in that server.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When starting Tribes, a HWCEXT Not Implemented error appears.

This error is likely caused by the presence of old video drivers on the system.
This can be resolved by disabling any previous Glide drivers. To do this, find the
GLIDE2X.DLL and GLIDE3X.DLL files and rename them with a .OLD extension
instead of .DLL.

When the files have been removed, download and install the latest available
drivers for all video cards on the system.

Tribes will now run normally.

Odd problems occur on a system with Windows '95 and AMD K6-2 350 MHz or
faster processor.

There is a timing issue between the Windows '95 operating system and
AMD K6-2 processors of 350 MHz and faster. This issue could result in
crashes or lockups that don't seem to be caused by anything else.

To resolve this, download and install the Windows '95 Update for
AMD-K6-2/350 from the Microsoft site at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/default.asp.

The game runs fine, but IRC will not work.

The Tribes player name is also the IRC chat nickname. This name must contain only letters or spaces. Numbers or non-alphabet characters will
cause the IRC connection to fail.
