Bowman quits after Wings win
After a dominant season, Detroit stands tall above them all; after standing tall above his peers, Scotty Bowman decided to retire. The Red Wings took home the Stanley Cup by defeating Carolina 3-1 in Game 5. Tomas Holmstrom and Brendan Shanahan scored for the Wings, and the incomparable Dominik Hasek made 16 saves to clinch his first title. Detroit claimed its third Stanley Cup in six years and the 10th in franchise history. Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP in the playoffs -- the first European to win it. Bowman notched his record ninth Cup, one more than Toe Blake, and as many as any coach in a major pro sport.
