from what I gathered on the site, it basically combines all your computers to do whatever task you give them, eliminating or at least alleviating the need for an expensive supercomputer

Yeah, Entropia contracts out your CPU cycles to whatever company it thinks "needs them" the most. They do ahve some decent projects from time to time but nothing worth getting excited about.
