[QUOTEURL=http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/10/04/rec.congress.medal/index.html]WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. House and Senate members are introducing resolutions to award the Congressional Medal of Valor for firefighters, police officers and emergency service personnel killed or seriously wounded in the line of duty in the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The medal is the highest national award bestowed to public safety officers.

The office of Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, who is sponsoring the Senate version of the resolution, says that bill will recognize those involved in the search, rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

What about the people on that airplane that fought with the terrorists before it crashed in the field in Penn? They deserve a medal!

It's kinda hard to put a medal on a person that's not intact, but I agree with you there, they deserve some sort of recognition for trying to stop the terrorists.

I'll probably start a fight with this, but I'm about tired of hearing about the NYPD/FDNY heroes. YES-thay have gone above & beyond the normal call of duty & YES, they are heroic for doing thier jobs. But, isn't the definition of a hero someone who does extraordinary things at extraordinary times? Going into a burning building is the job of firefighters & assisting the public is a police responsibility. The people on board the last plane were true heroes-they were everyday joes who, in order to save countless others, took the plane down. That is HEROISM, not thier job.
