Everything bill does is a ploy to line our pockets. Sadly, there are people and corporations dumb enough to do it when there are free or much cheaper office suites out there that do all you really need.

As far as the corporations go, most of them have a need to do it, although the reasoning is a little stupid. It goes like this; Corporation buys 500 machines from Dell preloaded with Office, etc. (newest versions). Corporation has a need to share files with older machines in network, clients, suppliers, etc. Version differences are a major pain in the ass. Corporation upgrades office suite across the board either to simplify network sharing, or to simplify IT training, or to mollify clients who have already upgraded. Bill just gets richer.

As to why individuals do it, God only knows, unless they're bringing files home from work to play with at home.
