Don't wanna install mirc because it's shareware. Here is a great free irc client: http://www.xircon.com/
A few years ago, xircon would've been a good choice, but it has since been discontinued, thus has not had any more new versions since, IIRC, around 1997. 
mIRC is constantly in development (as of this post) and only pops up a registration window once every month or so (in my experience)

I think it's still a good choice. I used it tonight and had no problems going into the xi chat room with it. It might not be so good if you are using a newer os such as XP, because it might put older files on the system. However, I did not have any problems running it under Win ME, and it didn't affect my system in any manner.
