HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (CNN) -- Scientists are looking into a futuristic technology that could lead to interplanetary missions and significantly improve cancer treatments to boot.

Astronauts have gone to the moon, but not other planets in large part because such a trip would require much more propulsion power and time. NASA researchers, however, are investigating antimatter for its propulsion potential.

Its explosive energy could someday enable journeys into deep space. A tiny amount would fuel the main engine of the space shuttle.

Well well well... you know what Photon Torpedoes utilize...

so we'll be able to fuel rockets, treat cancer, and blow the hell out of whoever decides to play Afghanistan next with extreme ease :D

Wow @ $80 million

Maybe that's why they abolished the idea of money in the 23rd+ century, cause it was just too damned expensive to get antimatter and they'd have to become drug lords just to afford space travel :D

Stop Laughing

it isn't that funny!

Are you implying that drugs equal antimatter? Well, both do give you a sense of weightlessness... :spin:

No, but the drug trafficking business can make a man quite wealthy in an economical sense, and that is what would be required to pay for enough antimatter to power a starship that travels through space seeking new life and new civilizations, and boldly going where no man (one, come TNG  ) has gone before.
