President Bush on Tuesday urged Palestinians to oust Yasser Arafat, a leader "compromised by terror," and embark on democratic reform as signs of their commitment to work toward the creation of a Palestinian state within three years.
"A Palestinian state will never be created by terror. It will be built through reform, and reform must be more than cosmetic change or veiled attempt to preserve the status quo," Bush said.
We know that in a time of continued violence in the Middle East, Palestinian authorities and the Western liberal-leftists who support them are accusing Israel of aggression against the Palestinians and the occupation of the territory they call Palestine.
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and its most active terrorist branches are trying to turn the war against international terrorism into a war of Islam against Israel and the West, and they are succeeding in this dangerous endeavor.
But who are the true Palestinians?
In the second century A.D. the Romans killed half a million Jews, and hundreds of thousands more were sold into slavery. The Romans renamed Israel as "Syria Palestine." Jews living there became known as Palestinians until the second half of the 20th century.
During World War II, the British army had a Palestinian Brigade made up entirely of Jewish volunteers. The Palestinian culture was Jewish, the language was Hebrew, the schools were all Jewish, the Palestinian Symphony Orchestra was all Jewish, and the Palestine Post was a Jewish newspaper.
In 1948, Arabs who had fled from Israel in accordance with calls from Arab nations attacking Israel that "all Arabs get out," began to claim they were the true Palestinians and that the land of Israel had always belonged to them. The liberal-left press to this day eagerly promotes that lie, but yet in 1948 Arabs owned a mere 3 percent of so-called Palestine.
Israel’s claim to the land goes back 4,000 years to the purchase Abraham made in Hebron. For 3,000 years Jerusalem was the capital of Israel, and the 35-acre Temple Mount, currently in the center of the dispute, was purchased by King David from Ornan the Jebusite.
It was the site of the first and the second Jewish temples. Those who call themselves Palestinians today do not have their own language and culture. They are all Arabs by birth, language and culture, and are close relatives to Arabs in surrounding countries from where most of them came, attracted by Israel’s prosperity.
The fact is that Israelis are not the criminals, but Yasser Arafat is. He committed his first murder at age 20. He masterminded the biggest hijacking (four aircraft at once), the largest number of hostages (3,000 at one time), the largest ransom extorted ($5 million from Lufthansa) and the greatest number and variety of terrorist targets (40 civilian aircraft, 5 passenger ships, 30 embassies or diplomatic missions and schools).
The PLO leader has never apologized or condemned any of his organization’s actions. The facts are tragically plain to those who will look beyond PLO propaganda, which brand Israel as an aggressor occupying "Palestinian territories" and portrays current Palestinians as "innocent victims."
In this connection it should not come as a surprise that PLO authorities choose terrorist attacks against Israel as their primarily weapon and have prepared hundreds of suicide bombers. As a result of decades of PLO propaganda, currently too many Palestinian children think only about killing Jews and dying in the process.
It is heartbreaking to read how some parents and political leaders encourage their kids to become suicide murderers. Even PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat’s wife says she would send her son (if, of course, she had one) off to blow himself up to kill Jews. It is scary to hear that the PLO’s al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade reports it has 200 girls and young women ready to turn themselves into human bombs.
It’s very difficult to say for how long these terrible trends will continue. But we cannot change anything there if we will not recognize that Israel is not the aggressor and is the legitimate occupant of its own land.
Terrorism is inspired by Israel’s neighboring Arab nations, whose leaders do not even think about having an open society such as the Jewish state close to them, and want only to destroy Israel and Western civilization as soon as possible.
