[quoteurl=http://www.shacknews.com]Well today is the big day where NVidia changes the world if we're ready or whatever the heck that latest slogan they had was. The GeForceFX card has been unveiled on a few of the hardware websites and in a fashion that isnt really quite NVidia, the new generation card really isnt very impressive. In fact it's marginally faster than a Radeon 9700pro at best, and ATI's next-gen card is slated to come out in less than 8 weeks following the GeForceFX shelf date.

One thing to keep in mind though is that as always these are early drivers, and performance gains will probably happen... Enough to trade up? Hrm... yeah you might wanna ponder that one for a bit and see what ATI's new card looks like in a month or two. AMAZING NOTE: As really insightful and clever as those 'LOL 3DFX'd!' and 'NVidia is doomed!' posts are, we're gonna mark them as stupid just to be rebelious. Here is the benchmark parade:[/quoteurl]

For the price of the Geforce FX, I could get a 9700 Pro and a vapochill for it to overclock it by 100%.

Well, if you did get stuck with a GFFX, luckily you can find alternate uses for it. Take for example...

The Carmack speaketh on NV30

John Carmack made a .plan update and spoke about his observations about the card.

[quoteurl=http://www.shacknews.com/docs/press/012903_carmackplan.x]I am using an NV30 in my primary work system now, largely so I can test more of the rendering paths on one system, and because I feel Nvidia still has somewhat better driver quality (ATI continues to improve, though). For a typical consumer, I don't think the decision is at all clear cut at the moment.
For developers doing forward looking work, there is a different tradeoff -- the NV30 runs fragment programs much slower, but it has a huge maximum instruction count. I have bumped into program limits on the R300 already. As always, better cards are coming soon.[/quoteurl]

Oooh boy. More woes for nVidia...

Waiting to buy an 5800 Ultra model? Well you won't be able to because they've been canned.

[quoteurl=http://www.hardocp.com/index.html#6494-1]the GeForceFX 5800 Ultra will never make it to retail. Those of you that PreBuy the cards will still get an Ultra model with the FX Flow cooling unit. Those who don't will have the opportunity to get the non-Ultra version (400/800) off the retail shelves for a price of US$300.00.[/quoteurl]

And ATI is right around the corner with the R350...
